Who according to you is a leader? Is a leader primarily characterized by their display of power or intelligence? Or do leadership values represent empathy and honesty? What types of leaders have you come across – someone who is an expert in his field or someone who is incredible at delegating and coordinating?

The definitions and expectations of a leader have transformed in recent times. The leaders are no longer expected to know it all or those who burn the midnight oil. Instead, a leader is someone who understands people, fosters their growth within the organization, and, most importantly, envisions organizational priorities like no one does. While this may sound like a regular corporate agenda, it is more than just that. Let’s delve deeper into what truly defines a leader – their core leadership values.

Leaders vs. Managers

Before we dive into the essence of leadership values, it is crucial to differentiate between leaders and managers. While many organizations use the terms interchangeably, there is a subtle difference in their roles and the values associated with each.

Managers are goal oriented while leaders are driven by vision

Managers are typically characterized by their goal-oriented approach, overseeing team activities and the specific tasks necessary to achieve desired outcomes. They persistently engage the team on the task at hand, seek progress reports, and offer guidance to enhance performance.

In contrast, leaders are driven by a broader vision and tend to prioritize the “what” and “why” questions. They focus on the larger picture, guiding their team with a strategic perspective and seeking to understand the underlying reasons and purpose behind the actions taken.

Managers are driven by money and fame, while leaders aim for transformation

Managers are often motivated by financial rewards, recognition, and fame in their careers. They may prioritize salary hikes or prioritize prestigious titles as a means of achieving their goals.

On the other hand, leaders are guided by a different set of aspirations. Their primary driving force is a commitment to transformation and innovation. Instead of solely seeking monetary gain or external accolades, leaders are inspired by groundbreaking ideas and the desire to bring about substantial change. They are motivated by a deeper sense of purpose and a vision to make a positive impact on their organizations, industries, or even the world at large.

Managers fear the risk, while leaders are risk takers

Managers are primarily concerned with mitigating potential risks and ensuring that the operations of their teams or organizations run smoothly. In their quest for stability and consistency, their agenda often is to avoid unfavorable outcomes.

However, leaders are inherently inclined to embrace new challenges, even when substantial stakes are involved. Leaders are not deterred by the potential for failure or adverse consequences; instead, they see these challenges as opportunities for growth, innovation, and transformation.

Leadership Values

While individuals may have different values that shape their leadership style, there are some common leadership values that are imperative for every leader. These values form the foundation of true leadership and play a crucial role in guiding leaders’ actions and decisions.

1. People first

Leaders consistently place the development of human potential at the core of their actions and decisions. Their unwavering commitment is to foster growth and transformation, both for themselves and the teams they lead. Leaders possess the unique ability to empower people to recognize their own capabilities and provide the necessary support for further personal and professional advancement. In fact, some of the most influential leaders are often great coaches, mentoring others on their journeys to success.

2. Vision Larger Than Life

Genuine leaders possess a vision that extends far beyond personal gain. Their aspirations are not confined to financial success; instead, they focus on leaving an enduring impact through their work. These leaders emphasize the importance of making a difference that transcends individual pursuits. They are driven by a desire to create a legacy and make a substantial mark on the world.

3. Lead by Example

Leaders are the torchbearers of their dreams and ideals. They introduce innovative models, advocate excellence, and uphold ethical standards. Leading by example goes beyond mere words; it involves actively demonstrating excellence in action. This leadership value distinguishes leaders who say, “You can do this” from those who declare, “We can do this together.”

4. Integrity

Integrity is a foundational leadership value that centers on the unwavering commitment to moral and ethical principles. Leaders are steadfast in upholding honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct in all their actions and decisions. Their integrity serves as a cornerstone of trust and credibility in their leadership, fostering strong relationships with those they lead.

5. Inspire instead of influencing others

Leadership is not just about exerting influence; it’s about inspiring others to excel. True leaders have a remarkable ability to motivate and uplift their teams, kindling a shared sense of purpose and enthusiasm. They lead by igniting passion and driving individuals to achieve their full potential

6. Inclusiveness

Leaders understand the value of diversity and inclusivity. They actively create environments that embrace differences and foster collaboration among individuals from various backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Inclusiveness promotes innovation, creativity, and a sense of belonging within teams and organizations.

7. Empathy

Leaders exhibit empathy by genuinely understanding and caring about the emotions and needs of those they lead. They listen attentively, offer support, and demonstrate a keen awareness of the challenges and aspirations of their team members. Empathy fosters strong interpersonal relationships and engenders trust.

8. Honesty

Honesty is a fundamental leadership value that involves transparency and truthfulness in communication and decision-making. Leaders are unswerving in their commitment to being forthright and candid, establishing a culture of trust and credibility within their teams.

9. Take Ownership

Leaders take full responsibility for their actions and decisions. They don’t shy away from accountability; instead, they embrace it willingly. Taking ownership demonstrates commitment, reliability, and a willingness to learn and improve from one’s mistakes.

10. Embracing Change

Leaders are open to change and view it as an opportunity for growth and progress. They encourage a culture of adaptability, innovation, and continuous improvement within their teams and organizations.

11. Fearlessness

True leaders are unafraid of taking calculated risks and facing criticism. They recognize that both risk and constructive criticism are essential for growth and advancement. Their fearlessness empowers them to push boundaries, explore new frontiers, and embrace challenges with resilience and determination.

Finding Your Personal Leadership Values

Now that we have explored the core leadership values, you might be wondering how to identify and embrace your own personal leadership values. Here are some steps to guide you on your journey:

1. Reflect on Your Purpose and Passion

Take some time to reflect on your purpose and passion. What drives you? What do you care deeply about? Your personal values often align with your purpose and passion.

2. Align Values with Actions

Evaluate your actions and behaviors. Do they align with your values? If not, identify areas where you can make adjustments to better align your actions with your values.

3. Seek Feedback and Self-Awareness

Ask for feedback from trusted colleagues, friends, and mentors. Their insights can help you gain a better understanding of how your values are perceived by others. Additionally, practice self-awareness by reflecting on your own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

4. Prioritize Growth and Learning

Leadership values are not set in stone. Prioritize continuous growth and learning to refine and strengthen your values. Attend workshops, read books, and engage in conversations that broaden your perspective and deepen your understanding of leadership.

5. Lead with Gratitude and Appreciation

Leadership values encompass gratitude and appreciation. Cultivate a practice of expressing gratitude towards yourself and others. Recognize and acknowledge the contributions of those around you, fostering a culture of appreciation within your team.

6. Embrace Your Authenticity

Remember that your leadership values are unique to you. Embrace your authenticity and let it shine through in your leadership style. Be true to yourself and lead with integrity and purpose.

Conclusion

Leadership values form the bedrock of true leadership. They guide leaders’ actions, shape their decision-making, and inspire those they lead. By embracing and embodying these values, individuals can unlock the power of their leadership potential and make a lasting impact on their teams, organizations, and communities. As you embark on your personal leadership journey, remember to reflect on your purpose, align your values with your actions, seek feedback, prioritize growth, lead with gratitude, and embrace your authenticity. By doing so, you will become a leader who not only achieves success but also inspires and empowers others to reach their full potential.
